An Experiment in Distance
We began with whispers,
The kind to leave smiles,
Festive response to routines,
A note here,
A challenge there,
Even when meant to be cautious,
We were both in our worlds in smile
I could send you a note today,
And somehow an eventual return,
Your words they would lead me,
To hope for another day.
Arrived the summer time,
With a sudden impulse and a yes
Together again … smiles
Along the path toward our lives.
The laughter afterward,
Our hearts beating knowing the other,
Now felt the same,
Now understood the reality of our name.
There has been this necessary time,
A distance a sweet memory instead,
The notion of you always in my mind,
And me, hopeful and in a constant yearn.
I do wonder about time,
How it is we do define our worthy
Reaction to the world around us,
When knowing our study would scrutinize.
We do live within one another’s eyes,
Even in the shadows of a distant freedom.
